Inspectors from the Florida Department of Agriculture have visited the site and caught a dozen African land snails. Agriculture investigators are continuing their search in Davie and will try to determine how the snails reached the property. The snails are considered a threat to both agriculture and human health.  If you see the African land snail, do not handle it and please report it to the Florida Department of Agriculture, at 1-888-397-1517 immediately.

Davie is especially on alert for this snail according to Mayor Judy Paul who said, “I am concerned for the health and well-being of our residents since the snail carries a harmful parasite that can cause meningitis. In addition, since Davie has so many nurseries, tree farms, and ornamental gardens, I am very concerned about protecting our agricultural interests since these snails are known to consume 500 different types of plants. They also attack houses, consuming plaster and stucco to replenish their calcium shells.  Please help to eradicate this dangerous snail and be on the lookout and report it.”

If you see the African land snail, do not handle it without gloves and please report it to the Florida Department of Agriculture, at 1-888-397-1517 immediately.  Other numbers you can call to report include:  954-410-4119, Mark Fagan, Public Information Officer, Division of Plant Industry or 239-707-1989, Rusty Noah, Assistant Bureau Chief, Bureau of Pest Eradication and Control Division of Plant Industry.
